POLITICAL SYSTEM

Nigeria is a federal republic with a presidential system, with three separate independent arms of Govemment namely; the Executrye, the Legislature (National Assembly) comprising ofthe Senate, and the House of Representatives, and the Judiciary.

Nigeria’s Federal system has a three-tier garemmental structure comprising, the Federal Government 36 State Governments and a Federal Capital Territory; and 774 Local Government Administrations, with the functions of each enshrined in the current (1999) Constitution.

CONSTITUTION

Nigeria's current constitution, the fourth since independence, went into effect on May 29,1999. Modeled after the US. Constitution, it provides for separation of powers among a strong executive, an elected legislature, and an independent judciary Critics of the constitution complain that the federal government retains too much power at the expense of the states. Although the constitution proclaims personal freedom and a secular state, it also permits Muslims to apply Sharia, or Islamic law.

The 1999 constitution, which was bequethed by the military has witnessed its first amendments, focussing essentialy on electoral reform. These was adopted by the National Assembly In July 2010.

ADMINISTRATIVE DIVISIONS

Nigeria is divided administratively into the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja) and 36 states, which are organized into the following six geo-political zones:

South-West Zone:

Lagos, Ebb, Ogun, Ondo, Oshun, Oyo

South-South Zone:

Alone, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, born, Rivers

South-East Zone:

Ada, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo

North-West Zone:

Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, ligawa, Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara

North-Central Zone:

Benue, Kogi, Kwarx, Nassarawa, Niger, Plateau.

North-East Zone:

Adarnawa, Bauchi, Bcmue, Gombe, Taraba, Yaw.
